A Physiotherapy Career?

The School of Physical Therapy, College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan is implementing a new Master of Physical Therapy (M.P.T.) program, replacing the current Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy [B.Sc.(P.T.)].  The School of Physical Therapy will enroll its first students into the Master’s program in the fall of 2007.

Features of the MPT Curriculum

  • 2 years and 6 weeks of continuous full time study
  • Curriculum delivered through a wide variety of educational methods with opportunity for independent discovery and inter-professional educational experiences
  • Advanced education in research methods as a foundation for evidence-based treatment
  • Development of a major research oriented project as a capstone for the M.P.T.\
  • A strong clinical focus with practicum experiences integrated throughout the program

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a four year baccalaureate degree (in any discipline) from a college or university of acceptable standing and must also meet School of Physical Therapy residency requirements. Applicants must successfully complete the following prerequisite courses:

  • Human Body Systems (human physiology), HSC 208.6 (or equivalent*); or the U of R equivalent, KHS 267 and 268
  • Human Anatomy ACB 210.3 (or equivalent*) or the U of R equivalent, KHS 168 (effective as of Fall term, 2006)
  • Statistical Methods, Stats 245.3 or PLSC 314.3 (or equivalent*); or the U of R equivalent, STAT 151 and 152

*Applicants must seek and receive approval for equivalent courses from the Admissions Committee well in advance of application.

There are considerable physical demands associated with delivery of many physiotherapy methods that students will practice and employ, such as assisting a client from wheelchair to bed. Therefore, a certain level of physical ability is required.

The required minimum Sessional Weighted Average (SWA) to be considered for admission is 70%.  Admission scores are calculated using the SWA (weighted at 60%) and the score from a structured interview (weighted at 40%).

Meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the School of Physical Therapy, as each year there are more applicants than available positions. Forty students will be accepted into the program each year. Five of the 40 available positions in the program are designated to the Education Equity Program for Aboriginal Students.

Successful applicants must be prepared to participate in physical body examinations which may require partial undress as part of the course of studies.
